Why stay at citizenM Amsterdam South
citizenM is a Dutch hotel concept built around one idea: a small room that is very well thought out, and a big shared living room downstairs. This hotel opened around 2009 as citizenM Amsterdam City and was later renamed after the district it stands in. Marriott International completed its purchase of the citizenM brand in July 2025; the hotel name stayed the same.
Every room has a king-size bed that spans the width of the room under a floor-to-ceiling window, a rain shower and toilet in transparent pods, and a tablet that controls the lights, blinds, temperature and TV. Wi-Fi and on-demand films are free.
Downstairs, the open-plan living room has iMacs with free printing, meeting space and a small shop, and canteenM serves food and drinks around the clock. The Beatrixpark is two minutes away, and Amsterdam Zuid station puts Schiphol one stop away by train.
The rooms: what you should know before booking
Read the room description carefully before you book; these are the points that matter most here.
- One room type. All 215 rooms are the same, about 14 m², with one extra-large king bed. A high-floor version exists, but there are no twin beds.
- See-through bathroom. The shower and toilet are in transparent pods inside the room. That works for couples, but less well for friends or colleagues sharing.
- Families. Children are welcome, but there are no cots and no extra beds, and each room has a single king bed. Sources differ on when children are charged as adults (from 11 on booking sites; free up to 10 according to Michelin). This is not a family hotel.
- Accessibility. There are lifts; one booking site mentions a few steps at the entrance, with a lift as the alternative. The hotel’s own pages contradict each other on accessible rooms. If you need an adapted room, call the hotel before booking.
