Why stay at the Okura
Prince Claus opened the Okura in September 1971. At 78 metres it was then the second-tallest building in Amsterdam, and it was the first hotel in Europe of the Japanese Okura chain. Two Dutch and two Japanese architects designed the tower together: Bernard Bijvoet and Gerard Holt with Yoshiro Taniguchi and Yozo Shibata.
The Japanese roots show most at the table. One building holds three Michelin stars: two for Ciel Bleu on the 23rd floor, which kept them in the 2026 guide, and one for Yamazato, the kaiseki restaurant that has held its star since 2002. The teppanyaki at Sazanka and the bento lunches at KIRI complete the Japanese line-up.
The location is quieter than the canal belt. The tower stands on the Amstelkanaal in De Pijp, with the Sarphatipark ten minutes away and the Albert Cuyp Market 13. The old centre is a short ride by metro 52 from De Pijp station.
The rooms: what you should know before booking
Read the room description carefully before you book; these are the points that matter most here.
- Views. Higher floors look out over the city or the canal. Panorama rooms (about 30 to 43 m²) are sold for their views, so book that category if the view matters.
- Size. Deluxe rooms are about 30 to 39 m². Junior suites and suites run up to the Presidential Suite. The hotel lists some sizes inconsistently, so check the room description.
- Families. According to booking sites, up to two children aged 11 or under stay free in their parents’ room using the existing beds. Cots are free; rollaway beds and babysitting cost extra.
- Accessibility. An Accessible Room type is available, and the lift doors are about 99 cm wide.
