Why stay at Sir Adam

The A’DAM Toren was built in 1971 as the Amsterdam office of Royal Dutch Shell, to a design by Arthur Staal. Shell moved out in 2009, and in 2016 the tower reopened as A’DAM, a building for music and entertainment, with Sir Adam on its lower floors. The interiors are by the New York studio ICRAVE.

Music runs through the hotel because music companies share the tower. Every room has a Crosley record player with vinyl and a Gibson guitar, alongside exposed concrete, floor-to-ceiling windows, local art and an espresso machine. There is a vinyl library on the mezzanine, and at check-in you can choose to give one euro to the A’DAM Music School, which is also in the tower.

The view is the other draw: from the north bank you look across the IJ to Centraal Station and the old city. The free F3 ferry leaves three minutes from the door and runs around the clock, so the centre is never far, but every trip there does start with a crossing.

The rooms: what you should know before booking

Read the room description carefully before you book; these are the points that matter most here.

  • Size. Sir Boutique and Deluxe rooms are about 18 m², corner rooms about 21 m², the Sir Suite about 38 m² and the Sir Residence about 40 m², according to booking sites. Boutique rooms are the smallest.
  • Views. Book a corner room for the best views over the IJ and the city. In Deluxe Corner rooms the shower is open, behind a partly opaque glass screen.
  • Families. Sources disagree on children, cots and extra beds, and one describes it as a grown-up hotel. The Sir Residence, with two king beds, sleeps four. Confirm the details with the hotel before booking with children.
  • Breakfast. Breakfast is not included in every rate, so check yours.
