This is where Amsterdam expanded at the end of the nineteenth century, and it has the street plan to match: long straight avenues, four-storey blocks, and shops at ground level all the way down. It has become one of the city’s better neighbourhoods to eat and drink in without becoming a destination in itself, which keeps prices sensible.
You are outside the ring, so plan on a tram or a fifteen-minute walk to reach the canals. In exchange you get the Vondelpark on your doorstep and a district that is genuinely lived in.

Getting around from here
- Tram 1 runs the length of the Overtoom and the Kinkerstraat to the Dam and Central Station.
- Tram 3 and tram 7 cross the district north to south, towards the Jordaan and Museumplein.
- The Vondelpark is five minutes away and you can walk through it to the Museumplein in about fifteen.
- Station Amsterdam Lelylaan is two stops away for direct trains to Schiphol.
