Why stay at the Pulitzer
The Pulitzer grew one house at a time. In 1970 Peter Pulitzer, grandson of the man behind the Pulitzer Prize, bought the first twelve canal houses here. His rule was that the house of your neighbour is for sale only once, and over about thirty years the hotel grew to 25 houses.
It actually opened in 1970 as a Howard Johnson’s hotel, in a partnership that included KLM and Pulitzer himself, and took the Pulitzer name in 1972. It was later run by CIGA and then Starwood’s Luxury Collection, which it left in 2015. Its largest renovation followed in 2015–2016, led by Lore Group’s creative director Jacu Strauss, who kept the beams and exposed brick and added a contemporary interior inspired by canal-house details and canal boat trips.
The houses face two canals, and you can see the difference. Merchants and aristocrats lived on the Keizersgracht, so the houses on that side are grander, while warehouses lined the Prinsengracht. Between them lie the inner gardens, where Pulitzer Garden serves breakfast and meals outdoors.
The rooms: what you should know before booking
Read the room description carefully before you book; these are the points that matter most here.
- Size. Rooms vary a lot from house to house. Entry-level Cozy rooms are about 15 m², and Classic rooms roughly 9 m² larger, according to Oyster. If you want space, book a Classic room or larger.
- Layout. Linking 25 houses means long corridors and changes of level. It is part of the charm, but it can be a walk from the lift to your room.
- Noise. Some guests report noise in rooms close to street level. Ask for a garden-facing or higher room if you sleep lightly.
- Families. Children stay free and cots are free. Extra beds are charged, at a lower rate for ages 3 to 12. There are several family rooms and suites, including a Family Garden Suite, and interconnecting rooms.
- Accessibility. The hotel has fully fitted accessible rooms, which must be booked directly with the hotel. Shower aids and a wheelchair can be arranged in advance.
