Why stay at Catalonia Vondel

The hotel joins seven historic houses on the Vondelstraat, all of them listed monuments, and keeps an original staircase. Behind the houses is a garden, where breakfast is served in good weather.

For 16 years this was Hotel Vondel, the namesake of the Vondel Hotels group. In April 2019 the operation, including the restaurant Joost, passed to the Spanish chain Catalonia Hotels & Resorts, and the hotel became Catalonia Vondel Amsterdam. Many older guides still use the old name.

The Vondelstraat is a quiet street, yet the Vondelpark and the Leidseplein are each about five minutes on foot. The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are about eleven minutes away.

The rooms: what you should know before booking

  • Size. The cheapest rooms are small: Single, Premium and Economy Double rooms are 12 to 13 m². Doubles are about 17 m², Superior Doubles 20 m² and Superior Twins 25 m². Book Superior or above if you want space.
  • Souterrain. Souterrain Doubles (about 16 m²) are below street level, with a limited view. They are also the only rooms where pets are allowed.
  • Hot tubs and suites. Some Superior rooms (25 m²) and the junior suite (37 m²) have a hot tub. The Vondel Suite is about 30 m².
  • Apartments and families. Four apartments of 48 to 80 m² have up to two bedrooms, and there are triple rooms. One free cot per room is available on request. Three of the apartments are reached by stairs only.
