The arrival of Sinterklaas in Amsterdam (Intocht Sinterklaas) is one of the biggest free family events of the year. On Sunday 15 November 2026, from 10:00 to 15:30, the Saint arrives for the 92nd time – and in true Amsterdam style, he comes by boat over the Amstel.

A parade on the water

Sinterklaas sails his steamboat over the Amstel river accompanied by dozens of decorated boats full of helpers, music and gifts. Around 400,000 spectators line the riverbanks and bridges to welcome him – one of the most festive sights on Amsterdam’s waterways all year. After coming ashore, the Saint continues on his horse through the city centre in a grand parade, ending with a celebration on a central square.

Best viewing spots

• Along the Amstel: the riverbanks between the Berlagebrug and the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) offer the best view of the boat parade – arrive early for a front-row spot
• The bridges: the Blauwbrug and Magere Brug are iconic but fill up fast
