Why stay at Zoku

Zoku Amsterdam was the world’s first Zoku when it opened in May 2016. Its founders, Hans Meyer and Marc Jongerius, set out to build a cross between a home and a hotel for people who live and work on the road, under the slogan ‘the end of the hotel room’.

The building is a former office block, converted with interiors by the Amsterdam design firm Concrete and furniture by the Danish brand Muuto. In the Lofts, sleeping, cooking and working areas are divided by screens and sliding doors rather than walls.

The heart of the place is upstairs. The 6th floor and the roof hold a living room, a kitchen, coworking areas, a terrace and a greenhouse with views over the city, and a vegetable and herb garden in hexagonal beds created with the City of Amsterdam.

The rooms: what you should know before booking

Read the room description carefully before you book; these are the points that matter most here.

  • Lofts. The Zoku Loft (24 m²) has a king bed on a raised platform, reached by steps. The Loft XL is 30 m², and the Loft XXL (46 m²) has a separate bedroom and sleeps up to three. Smaller Zoku Rooms (16 m²) and Bootstrap rooms with two single beds (12 m²) are also available.
  • Steps. In standard Lofts the bed is up a few steps. If steps are a problem, ask about the wheelchair-accessible Loft XXL, which must be booked by phone or email.
  • Children. Zoku says it is not ideal for children. Standard Lofts take no children or infants, and Loft XL and XXL take one child or infant at most. Cots and foldaway mattresses are available on request for a fee; there are no extra beds.
  • Long stays. With a kitchen, a work table and a shop in the building, the Lofts are set up for longer stays and for working on the road.
