Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht: The Former Library, Rooms and Location

Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is a five-star hotel of 122 rooms in the building that was Amsterdam’s central public library from 1977 to 2007. Designer Marcel Wanders kept the facade and rebuilt everything behind it, with a garden between the Prinsengracht and the Keizersgracht. It suits travellers who want design, a canal address and the Nine Streets around the corner.

Why stay at the Andaz

For thirty years this was where Amsterdam borrowed its books. When the library moved to the Oosterdok in 2007, Marcel Wanders kept only the facade and built a new hotel behind it, which opened in 2012.

The interior is one of the most playful in the city. Bell-shaped lamps hang under a painted sky of stars and planets, Delftware and Golden Age motifs turn up everywhere, and the wallpaper is made from images in old books about Amsterdam, a nod to the library that was here. Forbes counts more than fifty video-art works around the building.

Behind the hotel is a hidden garden that runs between the Prinsengracht and the Keizersgracht, with the Garden Room looking onto it. The hotel changed owners in 2026 but still trades as an Andaz.

The rooms: what you should know before booking

Read the room description carefully before you book; these are the points that matter most here.

  • Views. Rooms face the canal, the inner garden or the atrium, so not every room has a canal view. Book a canal-view category if that is what you want.
  • Size. Standard rooms are about 27 to 36 m², which is generous for the canal belt. Suites range from 55 to 141 m².
  • Families. Children of all ages are welcome. Under-threes stay free in a cot, and an extra bed is charged from age four.
