Why stay at Mr. Jordaan
Mr. Jordaan grew from a sofa. In the 1960s the founder rented out his couch to travellers, then added rooms, then floors, and eventually took over the house next door. That backpacker spirit is still in the motto: don’t be a tourist, be a traveller.
The rooms mix exposed brick with retro furniture from the 1960s and 70s, and reviewers often mention the homemade bread at breakfast. Hotel van Onna, a small sister hotel next door, shares its reception and breakfast room.
The Bloemgracht is sometimes called the Herengracht of the Jordaan, and it is a quiet, residential canal. Around the corner are the Westerkerk, the Anne Frank House, the Noordermarkt and the brown cafés the Jordaan is known for.
The rooms: what you should know before booking
Read the room description carefully before you book; these are the points that matter most here.
- Size. Rooms are small: singles start at about 11 m² and the triple is about 19 m². Pack light.
- Stairs. This is a canal house. The lift does not reach the top floor, and the attic room has stairs. If stairs are a problem, ask for a room the lift reaches.
- Bathrooms. Sources disagree on whether every room has its own en-suite bathroom; some of the cheapest rooms may have a private bathroom across the hall. Check the room description.
- No air conditioning. The rooms have heating but no air conditioning, which matters in a warm summer.
- Children. Children are welcome, but from age three they pay as adults, and there are no cots or extra beds.
