Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky: Rooms, History and Location

Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky is the large five-star hotel on Dam Square, with 402 rooms facing the Royal Palace. It has been a hotel since 1883 and became an Anantara in 2022; many websites still use its old NH Collection name. It suits travellers who want to be in the middle of everything, and do not mind a big, busy hotel to get there.

Why stay at the Krasnapolsky

The Krasnapolsky started with a tailor. Adolph Wilhelm Krasnapolsky came to Amsterdam from Poland in the 1850s, took over a coffee house on the Warmoesstraat in the 1860s, and built it up into a grand hotel on the Dam. The bar is named The Tailor after his first trade.

In 1880 the hotel’s own power plant lit the new Wintergarden with Edison bulbs, years before most of the city had electric light. When the hotel itself opened in 1883 it was the only one in Amsterdam with hot running water and a telephone in every room. The White Room, the Wintergarden and the passage are national monuments.

Today it is one of the biggest hotels in the centre, with conference space and a constant flow of guests. The location is the reason to stay: the Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk and the main shopping streets are right outside.

The rooms: what you should know before booking

Read the room description carefully before you book; these are the points that matter most here.

  • Views. Rooms on the front look across Dam Square to the Royal Palace. The square is busy with crowds and events, so if you sleep lightly, ask for a room on the inner side.
  • Size and style. Rooms were redone for the Anantara opening, finished in 2023. Suites include a Royal Suite overlooking the Dam and a Presidential Suite with a roof terrace.
  • Families. Cots for children up to three are free on request. Children from 12 pay the adult rate, and breakfast is half price under 12, according to booking sites.
  • Old room counts. Older listings give 451 rooms; that was the NH-era figure. The hotel now has 402.
