About Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer

The painter Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) lived and worked in Delft. His work is best known for his hushed, introverted indoor scenes, his unprecedented use of bright, colourful light and his convincing illusionism.

Unlike Rembrandt, Vermeer left a remarkably small oeuvre with about 37 paintings. Because his paintings are among the masterpieces in collections and museums around the world, his work is only lent out on rare occasions.
