Why stay at Bunk
The building was designed by Alexander Kropholler as the Roman Catholic church of St. Rita over ‘t Y and consecrated in 1922. It was damaged by bombs in 1943 and restored by C.M. van Moorsel, who added the west entrance tower in 1947. The brick basilica, with its lancet windows, timber roof truss and stained glass, has been a national monument since 1996.
In 2020 architect Rob Salemans of Raumkultur placed white modular room cubes inside the nave, so guests sleep under the church’s brick arches and timber trusses. The pods are stacked over two levels beneath the same arches.
Bunk is also a cultural venue. It holds regular free live music and exhibitions, runs a recording studio for artists and has an artist-in-residence programme. Its only other location is in Utrecht.
The rooms: what you should know before booking
Read the room description carefully before you book; these are the points that matter most here.
- Rooms or pods. Private rooms all have their own bathroom with a rain shower. Pods are beds in shared, mixed-gender dorm areas with shared gender-neutral bathrooms, and they are for adults only. Choose carefully.
- Room types. Rooms range from the Compact Room for two to rooms for three, four (a family version with a double and a bunk, and a friends version with two bunks) and five. Room sizes are not published.
- Epic rooms. Epic, Epic+ and Most Epic rooms for two have historic features such as rafters or stained glass, and some a round bath, garden or roof terrace. Some have stairs up to the bed.
- Light. Compact rooms have few windows, and some rooms look onto the inner atrium.
- Pods. Single pods are 90 x 210 cm and double pods 160 x 210 cm, each with a locker, power and USB.
- Families and access. Families are welcome in the private rooms, but under-18s may not stay in pods, and there are no cots. A review found no fully accessible rooms, so ask the hotel if you need one.

Metro 52 to Noorderpark, the first stop, is the quickest. Alternatively take a free ferry from behind the station: F2 to IJplein (14 minutes’ walk, about 06:30 to midnight) or F3 to Buiksloterweg (16 minutes’ walk, day and night).
