Why stay at the Marriott

J.W. Marriott Jr. opened this hotel in 1975 as the company’s first in Europe and its first outside North America. At the time it was the largest hotel in Amsterdam, and it celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2025.

The building is 1970s Brutalist, and it does not pretend to be a canal house. For the anniversary, the ground floor (lobby, library, M Club lounge and Bar TWLV) was redesigned by D/DOCK, with columns and floors that echo the original architecture and an art programme of works by more than ten Dutch and international artists.

It is a big business and conference hotel, efficient rather than intimate. The location is the real advantage: the Vondelpark starts across the road, the Leidseplein is four minutes away, and the Rijksmuseum seven.

The rooms: what you should know before booking

Read the room description carefully before you book; these are the points that matter most here.

  • Noise. The hotel stands on the busy Stadhouderskade, steps from the Leidseplein nightlife. Ask for a room away from the street if you sleep lightly.
  • Families. Family rooms with two double beds sleep four. Children aged two and under stay free in existing bedding, according to booking sites; no cot policy was found, so ask the hotel.
  • Accessibility. The entrance, lifts and meeting rooms are accessible, and there are mobility-accessible rooms with roll-in showers.
  • Old room counts. Older listings give 392 rooms; the hotel now has 396.
