Sofitel Legend The Grand is Amsterdam’s former city hall, a five-star hotel of about 175 rooms around a courtyard garden on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. It sits on one of the oldest canals in the city, between the Dam and the Nieuwmarkt, with a spa and indoor pool behind its historic walls. It suits travellers who want the old centre on the doorstep and a quiet courtyard to come back to.

Why stay at The Grand
Few hotels in Amsterdam have a past like this one. The site began as two medieval convents. After 1578 it became the Prinsenhof, a lodging for important guests, and from 1656 to 1795 it housed the Amsterdam Admiralty, whose 1662 office facade is still the hotel entrance.
From 1808 until 1988 the building was Amsterdam’s city hall. Generations of local couples married here, and so did Princess Beatrix and Prince Claus in 1966. It opened as a hotel in 1992 and became Sofitel’s first Legend hotel in Europe in 2011.
Inside, the old council rooms and corridors give it more character than most luxury hotels. The restaurant has a large COBRA mural by Karel Appel, whose colours set the palette for the 2011 interior. Behind the street front is a calm inner courtyard with a garden and terrace.
The rooms: what you should know before booking
Read the room description carefully before you book; these are the points that matter most here.
- Size. Rooms and suites vary a lot because they are fitted into historic wings. Check the floor area before you book a standard room.
- Views. Rooms face the canal, the courtyard or the garden. The courtyard and garden sides are the quietest.
- Renovation. A full renovation of rooms, lobby, courtyard and corridors was announced in 2025 and is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2027. Ask the hotel whether your room has already been redone.
- Families. Up to two children aged 11 or under can stay in their parents’ room using the existing beds, according to booking sites. A family room for four is listed.
